August 31: From "Teen Beat" to "Playboy"- Debbie Gibson is 41 today.

From an early age, Deborah wanted a career in show business. She began writing songs when she was only five years-old. When she was eight, she sang in the children's chorus at the Metropolitan Opera House in New York.

By the time she signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records at 16, Deborah had already appeared in a number of shows on Broadway Although Deborah was making strides in the music industry, she was otherwise a normal student at Sanford H. Calhoun High School in Merrick, Long Island where she was a cheerleader.

Called "Deborah" while growing up, her record company wanted her to go by "Debbie," and at one point wanted to change her name entirely. In 1987, Deborah (then Debbie) Gibson's first album was released, titled Out of the Blue. It spawned the hits "Only In My Dreams," "Foolish Beat" and the title track. At the time, the success of "Foolish Beat" made Debbie the youngest artist to have written, produced and performed a Number 1 song.

With over 5 million copies sold, Debbie set on to continue her success with her follow-up album, Electric Youth.

Released in 1989, Electric Youth went triple platinum, and spawned the title track and the single, "Lost In Your Eyes." The latter earned the New York Music Award for Song of the Year in 1990, while Deborah took home the same award for Best Pop Female Vocalist that same year.

In 1992, she returned to theater as Eponine in the Broadway production of Les Miserables. In the years that followed, Deborah played opposite roles as Sandy and Rizzo (respectively), in productions of Grease, and was also cast as Fanny Brice in the Broadway production of Funny Girl.

In 1990, Anything Is Possible was released and was certified Gold, while Body Mind Soul was released in 1993. 1995 saw the release of Think With Your Heart as well as a Greatest Hits album, and her self-titled album, Deborah hit shelves in 1997.

In the meantime, Deborah had returned to Broadway again, this time as Belle in Beauty and the Beast, and Gypsy Rose Lee in Gypsy at the Paper Mill Playhouse. You may have also recognized her voice as the narrator in Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat, and stepped into the shoes of Cinderella as the title role of the national production.

Playboy Photo

The March 2005 issue of Playboy featured a nude pictorial of Gibson, coinciding with the release of her single, "Naked." She has said she agreed to pose in an effort to revamp her image. The single peaked #35 on the Billboard "Hot single sales" chart in March 2005.

In June 2011, Gibson appeared in Katy Perry's music video "Last Friday Night (T.G.I.F.)" alongside several other guest stars.

Gibson co-starred with actor Lorenzo Lamas in the low-budget action/adventure film Mega Shark Versus Giant Octopus, produced by The Asylum and released on May 19, 2009. The film's trailer has become a viral hit, scoring over one million hits on and YouTube. The film premiered at the 2009 Cannes Film Festival. Ironically, Gibson's former music rival Tiffany had her film Necrosis (a.k.a. Blood Snow) premiere at the Cannes as well.

In August 2011, the final night of the Journey Through The 80s Tour, Gibson and Tiffany sold out Chicago's House of Blues. The two of them also starred in a Syfy original movie entitled Mega Python vs. Gatoroid, which aired on January 29, 2011. The pairing was at the suggestion of Tiffany, who wanted to play off their supposed rivalry.

August 30: "Papa John," John Phillips of the Mamas & Papas was born on this day in 1935...

... he died on March 18, 2001 at the age of 66.

The singer, guitarist, songwriter - was named March John Edmund Andrew Phillips - when he was born in Parris Island, South Carolina. His first band, The Journeymen, was a folk trio, with Scott Mckenzie and Dick Weismann. The Journeymen recorded three albums and made several appearance on the 1960s TV show, Hootenanny.

In Greenwich Village, Phillips met Denny Doherty and Cass Elliot. While touring with The Journeymen, he met teenager Michelle Gilliam, who became his second wife. (They were married from 1962 to 1970.)
John wrote most of The Mamas & the Papas songs, with Michelle helping with the lyrics. The short-lived group had several Billboard Top Ten hits including "California Dreamin'," "Monday, Monday," "I Saw Her Again," "Dancing In The Street," "Words Of Love"  and "Creeque Alley." Phillips also wrote the 1967 Scott McKenzie hit, " and "Me and My Uncle," the song performed for over 30 years during Grateful Dead concerts.

The group broke up in 1968 because of personal problems - inside and outside the group - and Cass Elliott's desire for a solo career. Phillips died just days after completing a new album, "Phillips 66." It was released posthumously in August 2001.

Phillips 66

A notorious carouser and drug addict, Phillips had a liver transplant in 1992. In September 2009, John's daughter Mackenzie Phillips claimed in a memoir, High on Arrival, published in 2009- eight years after John's death- that she and her father had a ten-year incestuous relationship.

She claimed it began when she was 18 years old in 1979 - on the eve of her first marriage - after Philips raped her while they were both under the influence of heroin and cocaine.

Not only was the account controversial, but some people who knew John doubt its authenticity.

August 29: Michael Jackson was born on this day in 1958...

... he died June 25, 2009. Had he lived, he'd be 53-years-old today.

Michael was one of the most famous singers, songwriter, arranger and dancer, first with "The Jackson Five" in the mid-1960, and later during his solo career which began in 1971.

Jackson's 1982 album Thriller is the best-selling album of all time. Off the Wall (1979), Bad (1987), Dangerous (1991) and HIStory (1995), also rank among the world's best-selling albums.

Jackson is one of the few artists to have been inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame twice. Other honors include 13 Grammy Awards - as well as the Grammy Legend Award - and the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award; 26 American Music Awards (more than any other artist, including the "Artist of the Century").

He also had 13 number-one singles in the U.S. and sold an estimated 800 million records worldwide.

He was also a humanitarian and philanthropist, donating and raising hundreds of millions of dollars for beneficial causes and supporting more than 39 charities.
