The release date for Chris Knight's fifth album, Heart of Stone, has been moved to September 2nd due to production issues. The album was produced by Dan Baird (of Georgia Satellites fame, as well as producer of Knight's widely-praised A Pretty GoodGuy and The Jealous Kind discs).

This is album number six for Slaughters, Kentucky native Chris Knight, and he does what he’s done the previous five times out: write and sing like a young Steve Earle before Steve left the narratives of small town scrappers and losers behind him to take up the larger concerns of the big city and big-city politics.

Chris Knight doesn’t care much for big cities or politics. His hometown, pop. 200, is all that’s left of what was once a thriving coal mining community. The coal is long gone, there aren’t any jobs, and now Jethro and Ellie Mae are liable to be cooking up a batch of meth out on the bucolic Back 40. The rootsy twang that dominates most of these songs will call to mind Ryan Adams in alt.country mode, but the songwriting is sharp, detailed, and acerbic, and if you’ve heard this music a thousand times, and you have, you haven’t met these characters before. Best of all is the devastating “Crooked Road,” the tale of a man who has lost his son to the mines and his wife to sorrow, and who now travels the circuitous mountain highways, trying to get somewhere, anywhere, all the while cursing everything in sight.

Guest musicians on Heart of Stone include Mike McAdam (Steve Earle, Radney Foster) on various guitars, Keith Christopher (Georgia Satellites, The Yayhoos) on bass, Tammy Rodgers (The SteelDrivers) fiddle and vocals, mandolin and banjo and Michael Webb (The Wreckers, Allison Moorer) on B-3 organ, piano and accordion. Producer Dan Baird also contributes on guitar and vocals.The twelve songs on Heart of Stone represent a creative maturity indeed unlike anything Knight has done before. The music itself is a richly organic sonic mosaic where snarling guitars and pounding drums live alongside mournful violas, plucky banjos, and even the occasional trombone and bouzouki.

Knight, who's been compared to such legendary songwriters as Steve Earle and John Prine has finally conquered his most demanding critic: himself.

Do You Believe Me Now is the next step in Jimmy's evolution as an artist. Time on the road has made his voice even stronger and more seasoned. A standout track is certain to be Jimmy's duet with Patty Loveless, titled "No Good For Me." "I hold honesty in lyrics and in vocal performance above all else in my music," he said. "For me, Patty represents the embodiment of honesty in music to which the rest of us can only aspire."

"Didn't Come Here to Lose" is a buoyant tune about not giving up on your musical dreams despite the challenges. "Where You're Going" is an empowering anthem that features a guest vocal by John Oates of the legendary duo Hall & Oates. Jimmy will be a special guest on Oates' forthcoming project.

One of the album's highlights is the autobiographical "Kerosene Kid," a song that holds special significance to Jimmy because of his extensive charity work with disadvantaged youth. "When you smell kerosene on a kid at school, you just know that they have a hard life," says Jimmy. "Usually the kids who heat by a kerosene heater are poor kids. They live in trailers or old houses and that's their only way of staying warm is to either use a kerosene or a wood heater. This song says `Don't let them get you down, keep your head up and stay proud.'"

Goddamned is a stripped down record filled with Brannan's silky smooth voice and acoustic guitar (not to mention the strings that pop up periodically). It's a brutally honest, instantly relatable album full of some amazing songs about love, heartbreak, living as a gay man, dating, and sex. It's probably one of the best albums by a gay artist that I have ever heard. Jay Brannan puts feelings that we've all felt one time or another into his songs and it makes it almost like he is singing about you. There are universal songs here that anyone, gay or straight, can relate to.

It's a flawless record. Not a bad song among the 11 tracks. Jay Brannan's lyrics are just amazing. In Bowlegged and Starving he sings, "I have my laptop for pleasure and my guitar for pain..." there is just something about the way he sings that line that just hits home.

One of the highlights of the album is the title track. It's about as epic as possible for an acoustic folk album. It's a song about the state of the world and its religions. It is the kind of song you just want to close your eyes and absorb. Listening to this song isn't enough. You need to feel it. He sings, "Mary and Muhammad are screaming through the clouds for you to lay your goddamned arms down, rip your bigot roots from the earth and salt the goddamned ground." To call it an intense song is a mild understatement. He sings it with such passion you can't help but be affected by it.

With Goddamned, Brannan has given us a pure album untouched by corporate influence and it is a dream album. It's an album that I have not been able to stop listening to since I received it. Powerhouse artists like Alanis Morrisette and Coldplay cannot come close to making an album like this. This is an album Rufus Wainwright wishes he could have put out.
